At Wildflower Dental in Sun City, AZ, we talk about dental implants a lot. But we know not everyone reads every single blog post. So, as a quick reminder, our team has put together a dental implant primer to explain the different parts of an implant. If you’re curious about the role of each part of this wonderful restoration, check out our list below!
Fixture: This consists of a long, cylindrical, titanium rod that is placed in your gums and secured in place. This helps hold up the rest of the dental implant, maintaining its structural consistency.
Abutment: A small connector part is needed to make sure the fixture adheres to the prosthesis. This is where the abutment comes into play. It is designed to screw onto the fixture on one end, and adhere easily to the final restoration on the other end.
Prosthesis: The final part of the implant, a prosthesis, can consist of a denture or dental bridge. These ‘complete the look,’ giving you a natural smile that is indistinguishable from the real thing.
