Did You Get An Implant? Take It Easy!

Dental implants from Wildflower Dental in Sun City AZ can change your life. They are fully functional replacements for lost teeth. Many patients who receive an implant are able to resume their normal lives within a day or two, but there is still a recovery process involved.

Every case is different, so what we describe in this brief article is very general. We’ll have specific instructions for each patient.

An implant is a metal post that is surgically placed into your jaw. Once it heals it has fused with the jaw bone, and becomes a foundation for one or more artificial teeth. Most patients say there is minimal pain involved in the actual placement, and can be controlled with over-the-counter medication. But you’ll need to take it easy at first.

During the initial recovery you can eat only soft foods. This can last for up to two weeks. A cold compress can help to control any swelling, and a mouth rinse can help keep your mouth comfortable. Mix half a teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of baking soda into eight ounces of water, rinse for several minutes, and repeat every hour.

Some restrictions:

  • You cannot smoke at all: not tobacco, not vaping, and not cannabis.
  • Do not drink through a straw.
  • Do not blow your nose, either, and if you feel a sneeze coming on, do it with an open mouth to prevent pressure in the sinus area.
  • Avoid hot foods.
  • Leave the stitches alone!

It takes about two months for the implant to fuse with the bone. If there is grafting involved to build up new bone, that can extend the timeframe. For most patients the jaw is fully healed in six to nine months.
