Dental Implants: Care and Cleaning

Dental implants from Wildflower Dental in Sun City AZ are the most advanced tooth replacement options available anywhere. With regular checkups at our office and daily care at home, they can and should last a lifetime.

Artificial teeth supported by dental implants look and function like natural teeth, and daily care at home is essential to get the most out of them. If you don’t take good care, you run the risk of a condition called peri-implantitis. This can result in the loss of the implant.

Implant Care

Dental implants, remember, are titaniuim posts that are inserted into the jaw, where they literally bond with the bone. Titanium is well-suited to this bonding, and once it occurs you have a rock-solid foundation for one or more artificial teeth.

Taking care of the implant is not much different than ordinary brushing and flossing.

  • Brush twice a day. The best times are in the morning and evening. Right after breakfast gets food debris and any bacteria that has built up overnight. Just before bedtime gets what has built up during the day. Get under and around the crown; this helps prevent peri-implantitis.
  • Use a soft bristle toothbrush. They are gentler on the surface of the dental crown (artificial tooth). Some research indicates electric toothbrushes do a better job on the cleaning, but an ordinary manual toothbrush is fine, too. We will recommend a low-abrasion toothpaste.
  • Floss. There is special crown and bridge floss that is great for cleaning around the implant itself. We’ll have a recommendation for you.
  • Use a water jet. These are also called water flossers. They do a great job getting at hard-to-reach places.
