Dental Implants and What To Eat

Once you have fully healed from dental implant surgery and your new artificial tooth has been affixed to it, you’ll begin enjoying the implant’s full benefits. As we explain in this post from Wildflower Dental in Sun City AZ, getting to that point is a journey – but one that is well worth it.

Having a dental implant put in your jaw is a surgical procedure that requires healing. Most patients get through the procedure without much discomfort. Waiting to use that replacement tooth to its fullest may be the hardest part.

But you need to eat, of course. For the first twenty-four hours after the procedure you’ll need to stick to really soft, cool foods that require little to no chewing. It’s a good time to get that blender off the shelf and enjoy a nutritious smoothie. You’ll need to use a spoon; it will be a few weeks before you can use a straw.

Other food choices during this first period:

  • Apple sauce
  • Milkshakes
  • Yogurt
  • Guacamole (mashed avocado)
  • Cottage cheese
  • Pudding

After a few weeks you’ll be able to graduate to soft foods, such as:

  • Bananas, and other soft seedless fruit
  • Steamed vegetables
  • Fish
  • Oatmeal
  • Tofu
  • Pasta
  • Pancakes and waffles

There are certain things to avoid, too: basically anything hard or crunchy.

  • Granola
  • Corn on the cob
  • Chips and pretzyls
  • Raw apples and vegetables

It may feel like an endurance test, and in a way, it is. But there is a real payoff. When the healing is over you’ll be able to eat all of your favorite foods. And you’ll have your smile back, too!
