Once a patient at Wildflower Dental in Sun City AZ decides to get a dental implant, they usually have questions. One of the most common is, how long is it until I’m fully healed?
You might think that’s a straight-forward question with a straight-forward answer, but it isn’t. That’s because every case is unique. We can, however, make some general forecasts.
The average healing time, start-to-finish, is between four and six months. Placing a dental implant is a minor surgical procedure and for most patients, the recovery time for that is short. Many are able to resume their ordinary activites within a day or so. Post-operative pain can usually be controlled with over-the-counter medications.
But there are sutures at the implant site, and they’ll need to stay in for a couple of weeks. There is also waiting time involved for osseointegration, which is the process of the implant fusing with the jawbone. That can take a couple of months, or a little longer.
Some patients may also need bone grafting in order to build up enough healthy bone to support the implant. This too can prolong the process.
But once it’s over and you’ve healed, you’re left with a restored smile and a replacement tooth that looks and functions like the real thing. And that is most definitely worth it!
