Avoiding Implantitis

When we place a dental implant at Wildflower Dental in Sun City AZ we send you home with detailed instructions on caring for the new implant. One of the reasons we do this is to help prevent a serious condition called implantitis.

First, a reminder: dental implants have a remarkably high success rate, greater than ninety percent. They are titanium posts inserted into the jaw to support one or more artificial teeth. Dental implants have become the tooth replacement option of choice.

Signs of Implantitis

But nothing, of course, is foolproof. As with any procedure there are certain risks involved. Sometimes implants become infected and require treatment.

Implantitis is similar to gum disease. It can damage the gums and the teeth around it. The signs of implantitis can be subtle, but as with any condition the earlier it’s identified the better the chance of successful treatment.

Signs include:

  • Discharge. There may be a watery discharge around the site of the implant. It doesn’t necessarily mean implantitis, but should be looked at. If it is dark and thick it likely does mean implantitis.
  • Redness. The tissue around the implant site may become red.
  • Inflammation. Oridinarilly you should be unaware of the dental implant, in the sense of physical sensation. Inflammation is not usually described as painful, but if the implant site becomes inflamed you may notice it when eating.

Again, dental implants have a high success rate. With proper care you should not have any complications. We schedule post-implant appointments to make sure your recovery goes smoothly.
